u-blox opens up its Bluetooth 5 module controller

By Nick Flaherty www.flaherty.co.uk

Swiss module developer u-blox has opened up access to the microcontroller in its NINA modules that now support Bluetooth 5 via a software upgrade
.

This is the first time designers can access the W101 and W102 modules directly to add their own applications. These run on Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52832 chip via the Nordic Semiconductor Software Development Kit, which also allows the upgrade to the latest version of Bluetooth Low Energy. This provides improved data rate and enhanced data transfer capacity cut power consumption and open new applications such as wireless point of sale printers and telematics.

The cost-efficient professional-grade module supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Bluetooth low energy as well as a slew of wired interfaces. The NINA-W1xx series is aimed at applications such as industrial automation, telematics, smart cities and buildings, point-of-sale and health devices.

“With this latest expansion of the NINA family, we’re pleased to provide our customers with increased connectivity and flexibility to help them stay ahead of the game. We hope to keep up the pace with more announcements in the coming months,” said Pelle Svensson, Market Development Manager at u-blox’s Short Range Radio Product Centre.
