Top embedded stories in July

By Nick Flaherty www.flaherty.co.uk

Somewhat surprisingly, it's Microchip's move to add intelligent peripherals to its low cot 32bit microcontrollers that dominates the news in July, beating Softbank's $24bn swoop on embedded processor core designer ARM.  This mostly highlights the practicality of engineers who need to know what they will need for their next designs, whether in industrial systems or the Internet of Things, and from hardware to software applications. Hence the interest in Altair using software defined radio for its cellular IoT chips and Avnet's move into supporting software apps in the cloud for IoT designs.

The $15bn takeover of Linear Devices by Analog Devices creates a significant new player in the embedded market, second only to Texas Instruments. With the Dust Networks technology now part of Analog, expect to see reference design for wireless sensors nodes that will make like easier for those designers.

But there's still plenty of interest in 'gee whiz' technology - Facebook solving the key challenge of moving data to and from its unmanned aerial basestations is deeply significant for the roll out of Interent service in rural areas around the world.

You can see how this has changed from May and June below.
